Plug separated from the cable during first installation. Item went straight to the trash.
The first enclosure worked and is still working. The failure of the second enclosure was caused by the fragile and hard-to-insert power connector. There are two problems with this enclosure. In addition, the circuit board in the enclosure is attached to the frame by two small screws. (The drive simply slides into the Sabrent, and it rattles around when you move it). The screws in the third enclosure were poorly attached, so the board came loose. Second, the loose socket and poorly attached screws indicate that quality control appears to be poor at the factory.I recently bought a Macally G-S350SU Hi-Speed eSata/USB2.0 External Storage Enclosure for 3.5inch SATA HDD from Amazon, and recommend it highly.
The drive is attached to a sturdy, nice-looking aluminum enclosure. (Yes, I should have disconnected the cable from the power supply before trying to plug it into the enclosure).The third enclosure failed right from the start. I've already ordered another Macally. The Macally attaches to a 12-volt power supply with one of those standard inline plugs, which means that there are no pins to get bent, and you can buy spare power supplies if you want to move the drive between computers without having to move the power supplies as well. I tried to attach the hard drive to the SATA cable attached to the circuit board for the enclosure, but as I did so, the cable and its socked socket detached from the circuit board for the enclosure. Unfortunately, two of them have failed. The pins bent, so I disconnected the cable from the power supply and straightened the pins.
Close examination revealed that the socket had not been soldered to the board. First, the 6-pin connection on the power-supply cable, which brings 5 volts and 12 volts from the power supply, is fragile and difficult to connect to the enclosure. The Macally is only a few dollars more, and in my opinion would be a better option even if it were more expensive. I bought one of these enclosures, liked it, and later bought two more. I inserted them into the enclosure, connected the power cable, and found that the drive would not power up. I need to move my drives from one computer to another, and it is clear that this connection will eventually fail.
If you try it remember it formats the drive to work with the cable box so make sure the drive is blank. I move it around a lot and don't feel the drive sliding around inside. I had an old 500gig drive. The drive stays cooler than when I had it in my computer case. this is a great way to save a drive that you have no room for internally in your computer.
My DVD accepts usb drives and can play divx movies straight from this unit. I found it easy to install the drive. Plugged it up and my drive came to life. Although the on off button should be in front after you use it a few times you hand just knows where to go to turn it off. there were 2 jacks. This thing is a work mule for me.
A power jack and drive jack slide drive into case then install 2 screws to hold case closed. There are no other buttons that you could accidentally touch.
This one works fine, except the drive is not secured inside the enclosure. It should at least be secured better to the pin mount. There were few to none eSATA enclosures available with free shipping, thus the pick. It plugs into the pin mount but only slides into the case.
I bought this for my husband and he loves it, no problems and loves how it looks. User friendly.
